Welcome to the New York City Wildlife Alliance
We are a grassroots organization dedicated to the protection of wild and feral animals in New York City; educating the public about city wildlife; and advocating for responsible and ethical wildlife policy.
Currently, we are working to defeat Council Member Simcha Felder's proposed local law and policy recommendations that are intended to reduce the feral pigeon population in New York City. The legislative report that is the basis of the proposal misstates the health risks associated with pigeons and makes unsubstantied claims that the "excess" number of pigeons poses a threat to the well being of New Yorkers.
Before the City takes actions that may affect the well being of these birds, we demand that a throrough study be undertaken by an independent advisory committee to determine:
- the approximate New York City pigeon population and population trends
- the extent of pigeons' reliance on human beings for food
- the potential suffering the recommendations may cause on the birds or the potential benefits
- the overall environmental impact
- the potential indirect effects on global conservation efforts and human understanding of nature
